The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont has been named by the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations as one of the top geotourism sites in the world.
“Vermont scored highly—best in the U.S.—in our survey of destination stewardship,” says Jonathan Tourtellot, director of the Center for Sustainable Destinations, “because Vermonters care a lot about character of place. And if the Northeast Kingdom is ‘the real Vermont,’ then no one will care more about protecting the Kingdom’s heritage, nature, and scenery than its residents. We chose the Kingdom for one of our first projects in order to work intimately with the communities of an alert, independent, and very self-aware destination. We hope that citizens will remain firmly engaged with tourism management here, benefit accordingly, and set a standard for the state, and the country."
As part of Lyndon's committment to its beautiful environment, we have recently created a Sustainability Studies major, the only Bachelor of Science program of its kind in the state of Vermont. By combining the laboratory study of our Environmental Science program with the government policy- and liberal arts- focused curriculum of the Sustainability Studies program, Lyndon provides students who are committed to preservation of the natural world a well-rounded education.
In addition, the Lyndon Sustainability Committee works with students, faculty, administration, and local government to determine and implement best practices that are associated with stewardship of the environment.
