Every summer, Lyndon’s nationally recongnized Atmospheric Sciences Department hosts a weather camp for students entering the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade. It is a day camp format: students arrive on campus Saturday morning and leave campus after activities conclude on Saturday afternoon, and then return to campus on Sunday morning.
The camp involves a variety of classroom and lab activities. Topics include cloud identification, severe weather, and climate change. There is a weather balloon launch and an analysis of data obtained from it. There is also an exercise in TV weathercasting, conducted at the LSC News7 studio—the same studio where the Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore learned his craft. On Sunday, students give presentations regarding what they have learned. Parents are encouraged to attend the presentations. Activities conclude Sunday afternoon with a BBQ for campers, parents, and camp staff.
