Theodore N. Vail—first president of AT&T, philanthropist, and noted supporter of education—once owned Speedwell Estates, the property on which Lyndon State College sits today. Each year at harvest season, Mr. and Mrs. Vail would invite all of the area townspeople to their estate to share in the bounties of the harvest at a clambake.
In 1915, Vail made a gift of his properties to the State of Vermont, which became the home of Lyndon State College.
Lyndon’s annual clambake is our way of preserving Mr. Vail’s memory, his hospitality, and his dedication to education, while furthering the educational opportunities of our students and the communities we serve.
