NEK Community Orchestra in Concert, May 4

“Around the World in 80 Minutes”

NEK Orchestra at LSC

The Northeast Kingdom Community Orchestra will present their spring concert, “Around the World in 80 Minutes” on Sunday, May 4 in the Alexander Twilight Theatre on the LSC campus. The orchestra is under the direction of Janet Edmondson, an adjunct faculty member in Music and Performing Arts at LSC. The orchestra includes talented and dedicated musicians from throughout the Northeast Kingdom; middle school students through adults.

The program, designed to take the audience “around the world,” begins in Italy with the “Allegro” from Vivaldi’s “Concerto in A minor for Two Violins,” travels to Germany for two movements of a Telemann concerto, and then stops in the Far East for John Barnes Chance’s rendition of the unofficial Korean national anthem, “Arirang.” Next stop is the American heartland, featuring some “good, down-home fiddling,” followed by a trip to England with the “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan-Williams. After intermission, the trip concludes with the “Symphony No. 4 in A major, Opus 90,” Mendelssohn’s so-called “Italian Symphony.”

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome; proceeds go to support the purchase of music and equipment for the orchestra. The Lecture and Arts Series is sponsored by Hayes Ford and Vermont Broadcast Associates. The Series is made possible in part by the Harriet M. Sherman Lecture Fund.
