Tara Fortner

Tara Fortner, Ed.D. is an assistant professor of education with a focus on literacy and upper level undergraduate and graduate level special education courses. She teaches courses in literacy, special education, educational psychology, and American Sign Language as well as supervises field work students. Tara has more than two decades of experience with students (age 3 – 21) with special needs spanning three states: NY, NH, and VT. She worked mostly as a school psychologist, diagnostic evaluator, and educational consultant. Her expertise is in the evaluation of and best practices for working with students with emotional and/or behavioral disabilities and learning disabilities. She also specializes in best practices for methods of teaching language and literacy in elementary classrooms including an in-depth understanding of how the structure of the English language influences students’ language and literacy development.

Additional special interests: Use of American Sign Language in early childhood and elementary classrooms

Research interests: Equity of educational opportunities and effective interventions for students who experience academic skill problems
