Indigenous Rights and Wrongs in Guatemala

Wednesday, March 16, 2016 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM in Burke Mountain Room

LSC Professor Dr. Daisy McCoy visited a number of indigenous communities in Guatemala while investigating Mayan numbers during her spring 2015 sabbatical. In these communities, she heard many stories involving injustice and hardships and observed a people struggling to survive in the face of unjust land ownership, evictions, and extreme poverty. She also visited leaders who have been imprisoned because of their work to help communities organize to get their rights. These stories and the ongoing projects designed to give indigenous communities better lives and hope for the future will be shared.
